What is step up transformer? its types, working, advantages, disadvantages & Applications

A step-up transformer is a type of electrical transformer that increases the voltage of an alternating current (AC) power source. It is a device that has more turns of wire on the secondary coil than on the primary coil. The primary coil receives power at a lower voltage, and the secondary coil steps up the voltage to a higher level.

Working of step-up transformer:

The working of a step-up transformer is based on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. When an AC current is applied to the primary coil, it generates a magnetic field around the coil. This magnetic field then induces a voltage in the secondary coil, which has more turns than the primary coil. The induced voltage in the secondary coil is directly proportional to the ratio of the number of turns in the secondary coil to the number of turns in the primary coil. Thus, by increasing the number of turns in the secondary coil, the voltage can be stepped up.

Types of step-up transformer:

There are two types of step-up transformers: single-phase and three-phase. Single-phase step-up transformers are used for domestic and commercial applications. whereas three-phase step-up transformers are used in heavy industries and power transmission systems.

Advantages of step-up transformer:

  1. It can efficiently increase the voltage level of an AC power source. Step-up transformer makes it easier to transmit electricity over long distances.
  2. It is simple and easy to use.
  3. It is cost-effective.
  4. It helps to isolate electrical circuits, providing protection against electrical shocks.

Disadvantages of step-up transformer:

  1. It cannot be used for DC power sources.
  2. The higher voltage level requires special insulation and safety measures to prevent electrical hazards.
  3. It can be bulky and heavy, making it difficult to transport.
